Self Storage and Public Storage – A US Phenomenon Spreading Round the World

Of the 58,000 or so public storage and self storage facilities around the world some 46,000 of them are in the United States, and there appears to be huge growth potential outside the US. To put it into some kind of perspective there is more than 2.35 billion (yes, BILLION) square feet of self storage in the United States alone and if all of these storage rental facilities were sat side by side it would be the equivalent of a land area some three times the size of Manhattan Island all under one roof – phew.
More modern and high tech storage units use biometric security entry equipment, so that only lawful users can enter, and at any rate the only person who has access to a unit regardless is the person named renting, so in fairness it is as secure as a safety deposit box in a bank vault.
