Drug and alcohol fetal abuse is a big issue in modern society

Drug and alcohol fetal abuse is a big issue in modern society and there are many unique issues, health problems and mental health issues all of which are unique to Fetal Alcohol Syndrome which differ from child to child and need to be dealt with in varying ways dependent on the patient. Infants born to a mother who has had alcohol and/or drug and substance abuse issues during the pregnancy can and frequently do suffer mental and physical deficiencies throughout their entire lives.
Dependent on the level of abuse and the type of drugs and/or substances abused, combined with the frequency of abuse will dictate the level of damage caused to the fetus during the period of pregnancy. Typical physical tell tale signs of exposure to alcohol, drugs and/or other substance abuse include but are not limited to low birth weight, facial abnormalities, including smaller eye openings and flattened cheekbones as well as small head circumference. However, because an infant may be born with these issues it may not be as a result of alcohol and/or drug and substance abuse by the mother, and to be certain the history of the mother needs to be investigated, as well as tests carried out on the newborn.
As the child grows and develops, more tell tale signs and symptoms will begin to emerge at intervals and although they may seem little to the untrained eye, the child should be seen by a medical professional in order to gain as much help and treatment as possible. But where does one go to seek help and obtain the answers?
