Decompression Illness – Avoidable Occupational Hazard

Decompression illness, decompression sickness or more commonly referred to as ‘the bends’ is an occupational hazard which is avoidable with good practice and adherence to safety procedures; but more important sound education of the risks and dangers posed.
Workers in industries where the use of pressurized environments such as SCUBA divers and suited divers, submariners and pilots of aircraft and indeed people who have to work in pressurized vessels and pressurized working areas put them at risk, and recreational divers can all benefit from sound educational courses run by the London Hyperbaric Medicine, based at Whipps Cross Hospital.
Risk can be cut to a minimum with sound education, but also the symptoms of ‘the bends’ can be more clearly understood in a unique training and educational environment.
An occupational hazard for those involved in working in pressurized environment, one which can so easily be avoided.
