Which is your favorite, a bassoon or an oboe?

This is a question which has vexed musicians and music lovers through the ages since the bassoon first appeared in its modern form around the beginning of the nineteenth century. For me the sound which is produced by bassoons can typically be compared to the richness of a male baritone voice; its reedy timbre is often described as being warm and darkly glowing. Indeed, it is probably by far the best instrument of the orchestra, and by far and away the one sound which would be sorely missed; unless of course your favorite instrument is the oboe.
