Launching a Chinese lantern as to ward off evil spirits and bring good luck into the lives of those launching them has been a tradition in China since around the 3rd century.
Previously they were used in signalling during times of war, hostilities or incursions by the local warlord or Emperor’s trusted generals.
It quickly caught on among the civilian population and the rest, as they say, is history.
The tradition has spread throughout the world with the advent of modern lines of communication and is now a firmly established way of celebrating New Year, birthdays and celebrations of every kind and is a refreshing change from fireworks which have been the traditional method of celebration.
However the lanterns do not explode and are animal friendly, you will not see animals cowering under the sofa in fear.
This old Eastern tradition is one which is becoming firmly established in the west and is a welcome addition to any celebration.
